Attending as a visitor
This page contains information on how members of the public can attend evidential hearings.
The first step is to email your name, preferred email address and phone number to HWT@shekubayohinquiry.scot letting us know which day you would like to attend. Please use 'Ticket request' in the subject of your email. You will need to submit a separate request for each day you want to attend.
A member of our team will get back to you. If you haven't heard by 2pm on the day prior to the hearing you want to attend, please call us on 0131 376 7817 and we'll be happy to help you.
Submitting an application to attend does not mean a ticket will be available. If no tickets are available for the day you'd like to attend, you'll be placed on a waiting list.
See the FAQ below for more information on what to expect.
For information on how we use your data, read our privacy notice.
How do I get a ticket for a hearing?
As outlined above, email HWT@shekubayohinquiry.scot with your name, email address and phone number, as well as which day you would like to attend. One of our team will get back to you.
Where are hearings held?
Hearings are held at Capital House in central Edinburgh.
For the full address, a map and public transport information go to the where to find us page.
Can I get a ticket for a full week of hearings?
No. A new request will need to be submitted for each day you wish to attend.
Am I guaranteed a ticket?
Submitting an application to attend does not mean a ticket will be available. If no tickets are available for the day you'd like to attend, you'll be placed on a waiting list. We will contact you via email if a place becomes available.
Remember, you can watch a live stream of any hearing on our website and YouTube channel.
Recordings and transcripts of hearings are also available on the website.
How long will each hearing last?
Hearings will usually begin at 10am and run until approximately 4pm. There will be breaks at particular points in the proceedings, including lunchtime.
How will I know if the hearing I have a ticket for has been cancelled?
We will contact you by phone or email if the hearing you have a ticket for has been cancelled. Up-to-date schedules for hearings will be published on the website – please make sure you check the schedule for any amendments before traveling to Capital House.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, but a ticket must be reserved for each person attending.
Can I bring a bag?
For security reasons we advise that you don't bring a bag, though small bags, such as handbags and small backpacks, are allowed. Bags may be subject to search on arrival at Capital House.
What will happen when I arrive at the Inquiry?
On arrival at Capital House you will be directed to the fifth-floor reception, where a member of the team will take your name and issue a visitor pass.
If the hearing room is not yet open to the public, you will be directed to a seated waiting area.
Can I eat or drink in the hearing room?
Eating and drinking is not allowed in the hearing room.
There are no catering facilities in Capital House, though nearby Lothian Road has a good selection of shops and cafes.
What happens if I arrive late for the hearing?
Entry is not allowed after the time specified in the email confirming your seat reservation. On most days that will be 9.30am.
If you need to leave the Inquiry offices for any reason you will not be re-admitted until a break in proceedings.
Who will be in the hearing room?
Witnesses are seated at a U-shaped table in the middle of the hearing room with Inquiry counsel, solicitors and evidence team members. This table faces Lord Bracadale and the assessors to the Inquiry when they are present.
There may be a variety of other people attending, including legal representatives, security staff, Inquiry staff, members of the public and members of the media.
Can I take my phone into the hearing room?
Phones and electronic devices are allowed, though they should be on silent mode at all times. You should not make or accept phone calls, or take photographs or videos in the hearing room.
What should I do if I have accessibility needs?
Contact us via email at HWT@shekubayohinquiry.scot or by telephone on 0131 376 7817 and a member of the hearings and witness team will be happy to help.
